Project Background
The City of Saline wanted to improve its overall water quality, but was faced with a few factors that ruled out a traditional replacement approach. First, the City wanted to avoid disruption to local businesses and residents. The area of East Michigan Ave. is located in a busy commercial area surrounded by a business district containing primarily restaurants and retail outlets. Second, the project needed to be expedited on a tight timeline that would allow the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) to start its planned road work on schedule. And, third, there was a lot of underground utility congestion to consider.
Project Challenges
Completed on time, and only a modest $200 over budget, the City of Saline enjoyed peace of mind knowing that the project was in trusted hands with expectations met as contracted. The MDOT road work project was able to start as scheduled and the City’s largest customer American Soy (35 per cent of the City’s water demand) noticed an improvement to water quality and clarity, consequently saving on filtration costs.
Project Steps
From March 2022 to June 2022 2,988 ft. of 12-in. cast-iron pipe was lined with ALTRA, a trenchless watermain rehabilitation liner composed of two polyester jackets and an epoxy resin. Due to the location and nature of the project, no other pipe replacement method was considered. The City of Saline specifically chose FER-PAL because of its years of experience working with the CIPP product and process demonstrated in Southeast, MI.
