Project Background
The City of Madison, WI has a long and successful history of working closely with FER-PAL on infrastructure renewal projects. The benefits of Cured-in-Place-Pipe lining has served the city so well that it has incorporated an annual CIPP program into its budget and ongoing water infrastructure assessments. Over the past 10 years, renewal projects have been completed across the city. The most recent one was a preventive job on Lake Mendota Drive where an older pipe was reaching the end of its life span. This was a continuation of work done down the same pipe.
Overview
Although FER-PAL often operates as the general contractor on projects such as this, they have a long standing partnership in Madison, where the city uses its own crew to do the civil work, digging the pits, and then FER- PAL cleans the existing watermain to prepare for the lining process. They use a special camera to check the condition of the pipe and additional tools to measure, then the liner is installed. While the pipes are being prepared and lined, residents are provided water through an above ground temporary bypass. In the case of the Lake Mendota Drive project, the lining was completed over four weeks in September 2022.
Madison is a great example of a city that understands the benefits of renewal versus replacement. Proactively analyzing and planning projects before they become emergent allows them to save money and avoid major disruptions.
