Project Background
This project was apart of the City’s yearly watermain rehabilitation program to address it’s aging and failing watermains. The majority of the watermains included within this program were cast iron, including a large amount that contained insitu-lined cement mortar that required removal. This project also contained a section of asbestos cement watermain.
Overview
The majority of this project was located in moderate to dense residential neighbourhoods with some commercial sections included. This project ranged from neighbourhoods with mid to low rise apartment/condo buildings to that of mature tree-lined neighbourhoods with large lots. The commercial locations of this project included Kingston Rd, Upjohn Rd and Sheppard Ave. The residential neighbourhoods included a large residential pocket of the Orton Park Neighbourhood along with Post Rd, the Bridal Path, Scarden Ave and Cateroqui Cres.. Due to the age of the neighbourhoods a large amount of services were required to be replaced and upgraded. Through communication and coordination with the City, it’s consultant and the City’s forestry department, FER-PAL was able to prevent the damaging or removal of over 40-trees.
One of the largest challenges within this contract was that over 70% (5750m) of the watermains within this contract required the removal of cement mortar lining prior to the installation of CIPP lining. Ensuring a quality product was installed meant that the cement lining required full removal. FER-PAL was able to successfully remove all of the cement mortar coating. The success of this removal was evident as the project was completed with a defect ratio of .10%.
